Sunfood Endorses CA Prop 37 Right To Know Initiative

As a leading provider of high-quality superfoods including sustainable, organic and raw food products, Sunfood endorses Proposition 37, the California initiative to label foods containing GMO ingredients. With this endorsement, Sunfood is financially contributing to the Right To Know campaign fund, and dedicating company resources up to the election for a scheduled Prop 37 outreach program to Sunfood customers as well as Sunfood followers on social media networks.

If passed, the Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act will require special labels for retail food made from genetically modified ingredients (GMOs) that are sold on California retail shelves. This is a giant step forwards for food label transparency that Sunfood endorses, and according to multiple polls, 9 out of 10 Americans agree.

“Yes on 37 is a grassroots people’s movement made up of millions of consumers who support labeling and who worked to get this measure on the ballot,” said Stacy Malkan, a spokeswoman for the Yes on 37 Right To Know campaign. “We deeply appreciate companies like Sunfood for being champions for our right to know what's in our food.”

It is estimated that more than half of the products found on the shelves of California grocery stores contain genetically modified ingredients. Currently, both state and federal law do not regulate food containing GMOs.

“As a mother, I’m proud to be part of an organization that is endorsing real change in the future of food transparency at the grocery store, and what we feed our children,” said Alessandra Lezama, Chief Executive Officer of Sunfood. “We’re committed to help ‘Right To Know’ reach its goal and get Prop 37 passed this November.”

In a further display of company commitment to food transparency, all new Sunfood products are verified and labeled GMO-free by the Non-GMO Project, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that is North America’s only third party verifier of non-GMO food and products. Existing Sunfood products without the Non-GMO label identification will be completely phased out by 2013.
