5 Fresh Ways to Celebrate May Day

5 Fresh Ways to Celebrate May Day

Apr 29th 2022

Happy May Day Sunfoodies! Did you know we're officially half way between the spring equinox and summer solstice? Rooted in ancient agricultural practices, May Day is known around the world as a day to celebrate new life and a fresh start, fertile crops and a successful harvest. May is arguably the best time of the year as we get ready for warm summer morning hikes, relaxing on the beach, enjoying bonfires with friends and beautiful smoothie drinking weather with family!

May Day is celebrated across many cultures, each with their own traditions and meanings. In England, dancing around the may pole with colorful ribbons, and crowning "May King and Queen" has been celebrated for centuries - many times you can find this still being practiced in primary/elementary schools! In early America, May baskets were woven and used to deliver fresh flowers and greens to welcome the change in weather and spending time outdoors.

Here are 5 of our favorite ways to celebrate May Day!

Breathe, Stretch, STRESS LESS, and let it go!

Honestly, the shift in seasons can be a lot. There is always a deep need to purge, clean and reset - spring cleaning burnout, anyone?? Here at Sunfood HQ, we're honoring the need to feng shui (or Kondo method) our spaces this May Day and make room for new energy - but we aren't doing it without help! Sunfood Stress Less is our go-to tonic for just about everything! Deadlines, deep cleaning and summer gathering plans are stress-free thanks to our special ingredient friends: Matcha, Ashwaghanda and Lemon Balm.

Make A Lei, Give A Lei!

In Hawaiian cuture, it is customary to make a beautiful lei a'i (necklace) or po'o (head) on May 1st to celebrate the beauty of Hawai'i and the Aloha spirit. Using native plants and flowers, beautiful lei are made to wear and to share in the community. Using plants and flowers from your garden or in the wild areas around you, we encourage you to sit and enjoy the process of making your own version of a lei, sharing space and having meaningful conversation with those you love. There's no better way to bring in the season!

No one wants to be defeated, so Beet it!! (Just beet it...)

There's no better way to usher in May Day than to dance it out! Dancing can be physically, energetically and spiritually healing. If May Day is your day to hit the reset button, we've got the potion to get your body back in motion. Energizing Beets & Mushrooms is a satisfying and refreshing boost to keep up your endurance while dancing around the house or down the boardwalk.

Let the sunshine (and the plants) come in!

In England, Bringing in the May is the tradition of gathering cuttings of plants or flowers and simply brining them into the home. In Ireland, a common May Day tradition is to decorate a May Bush with ribbons and flowers; and in the days of early America, May Baskets were often woven and filled with flowers and small gifts for neighbors and family. Celebrating your own version of this can be as simple as setting out a bouquet of flowers or adding a new plant to your space!
