Best Superfoods During Pregnancy (or While Breastfeeding)
Apr 25th 2019
Are you expecting a new addition to the family or (oh my goodness!) the baby has already arrived? This is such an exciting time. It’s also a crucial time in terms of upping the game on your diet regimen because now you’re eating for two. Either you're currently expecting or with a newborn, what you’re able to eat (or in the mood to eat...because those hormones can wreak some serious havoc on appetite, right?) it’s never too late to add some superfoods to help to keep you and your baby super-duper healthy.
The first thing we want to say is BE PICKY! The health of you and your baby is of the utmost importance, and you’ve stumbled upon our blog because this is a priority to you. When it comes the superfoods you consume make sure they’re clean, pure, and obtained from a trusted source. And as always, it’s a good idea to consult with your physician regarding nutrition and supplements.
Which superfoods are safe to eat while you’re expecting or breastfeeding? Here are our top 7 recommendations:
Berries
Goji Berries and Golden Berries are rich in beta-carotene and Vitamin A. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that converts to Vitamin A, which plays an important role in cell and tissue development including your baby’s bones, skin, and eyes. Pregnant and breastfeeding mamas are encouraged to increase their Vitamin A intake of up to 40%(1). Acai berries are high in antioxidants, vitamins (A, C, E, and several B’s) and contain a noteworthy amount of amino acids and protein. This combo is excellent to help boost your immune system and energy levels(2).
Greens
Greens such as Moringa spinach, kale, and swiss chard are a must for new and expecting mothers. They are full of nutrients such as fiber, folate, iron, calcium, potassium, Vitamin K, and Vitamin A, just to name a few. And while greens already contain a healthy dose of Vitamin C, pairing them with a Vitamin C forward food such as Camu Camu can help increase the bioavailability of the iron already in these foods(3).
Beets
Beets are a healthy and naturally safe source of natural iron, which can help prevent anemia by increasing hemoglobin production in the blood during pregnancy; a benefit that is helpful for both you and baby(4). Beets are also high in betaine, a natural anti-inflammatory that can reduce swelling and discomfort during pregnancy. We could go on and on about beets but here are just a few other awesome benefits...can prevent indigestion, works as a blood purifier, supports the immune system, and can regulate blood sugar.
Olives
In the Mediterranean, raw olives are a staple snack for pregnant women. Olives are naturally high in antioxidants, heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients(6). Our raw Botija Olives provide an added dose of iron, Vitamin A, E and calcium...and they’re pitted so they make the perfect snack on-the-go.
Nuts
Raw organic cashews, Macadamia Nuts and Brazil Nuts are an excellent source of protein and omega fatty acids. Research suggests that upping omega fatty acids can help with fetal neurodevelopment and also help your baby to achieve an ideal birth weight(7).
Seeds
Seeds pair well with any superfood mentioned in this list. Adding magnesium-rich Pumpkin Seeds or Hemp Seeds can help your body utilize the calcium housed within the greens you consume...since magnesium is designed to do just that, and more. Chia Seeds are an excellent source of omega fatty acids. For some inspiration, check out our Super Chia Pudding Pie in a Jar recipe.
Cacao
Cravings during pregnancy are real! Allow yourself some grace with this fact. But healthy indulgences during and after pregnancy can totally be a thing so let’s talk about cacao; chocolate deliciousness without the sugar or other additives. Full of antioxidant-rich flavonoids that keep inflammation in check, cacao also offers mood-boosting benefits...which can be oh-so-helpful when hormones are running amok. Little fun fact that eating crunchy foods can help release serotonin and alleviate stress, so try adding some Crunchy Cacao Nibs to your favorite to yogurt or acai bowl. And if you’re in a creative mood, you can create all kinds of healthy chocolate-y goodness with our Cacao Paste!
